ResumoStormsurge events have become more frequent since the late 1990s, as recorded by observations in Santos. These events can cause disruption to navigation, operations on oil platforms, and the destruction of coastal areas. The main objective of this work is to characterize changes in conditions favorable to the occurrence of storm surges in Santos from future climate projections. 89 storm surge days were found in Santos using wave height data by the ERA5 Reanalysis, during the months of May 1981 to 2010. These storm surge cases were grouped according to their atmospheric conditions and resulted in 3 favorable weather patterns for the occurrence of storm surges. In order to verify the ability of the Eta regional model, nested to the Brazilian Earth System Model (BESM) global model at 20 km spatial resolution, to reproduce these patterns, the daily meteorological fields of the model were compared with each of the three favorable patterns. to storm surges obtained from the ERA5 reanalysis. The results show that: 1) Pattern 1, presents 10 cases and is characterized by the presence of a cyclone on the coast of the city of Santos with intense winds and parallel to the coast; 2) Pattern 2, with 22 cases, presents an extensive track of intense winds over the ocean, formed by a high-pressure system to the south and a low-pressure system to the north of the South Atlantic Ocean; 3) Pattern 3 presented the highest number of events, 57 cases, and is characterized by the presence of southwest winds, coming from high pressure on the continent and the presence of a trough over the ocean. The results showed that the Eta-BESM 20 km performed well in reproducing the patterns favorable to storm surges. The model showed stronger winds over the ocean in all three patterns compared to the reanalysis. The same comparison was made to detect cases of storm surge in the future climate (2031-2060), using two greenhouse gas emission scenarios, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5. Climate projections show atmospheric patterns favorable to storm surges will occur less frequently. However, these events may be more intense. In order to evaluate the local impacts on the coast and obtain greater detail of the data and information, the second downscaling of the Eta model was generated, reaching a spatial resolution of 5 km. The present climate simulations showed the performance of synoptic scale systems in storm surges, superimposed on the effects of mesoscale circulation. Future projections show high accumulations of rain over the ocean in Pattern 1. Although, the lower occurrence in relation to the present climate has become more intense, which can cause more negative impacts on the city of Santos. On the other hand, Patterns 2 and 3 in the future showed precipitation concentrated along the entire coast of Baixada Santista.
